Another early start
– 4.20am alarm for an unhurried pack up and walk to the station for
the 5.10am train to Hamburg, where we had a tightish but thankfully
pretty relaxed connection for the train to Copenhagen. That train
eventually pulled up to a ferry terminal, where the it boarded a
ferry and we all set sail. We spent most of the 45-minute sea
crossing in the cafeteria lunching on frankfurters and fries.
We changed trains
again in Copenhagen and then, finally, at about 7.30pm, we arrived in
Stockholm under a light drizzle. Once again, our pre-printed map was
pretty useless and we had to ask directions a few times. The second
time, one of the lovely, helpful girls we approached pulled a city
map from her handbag and handed it over to us.
Not long after, we
found the hotel, which came in two parts – a conventional, rather
fancy above-ground version and a weird, below-ground warren of tiny
rooms with double-bed bunks and shared bathrooms. No prizes for
guessing which one we had booked – still at quite a significant
expense. After ditching our bags, we headed out in search of dinner,
eventually ending up at Tutto Bello, a rather gorgeous waitresses
were incredibly friendly. After the meal, we struck up a conversation
with one of them, Sarah, who turned out to be the owner (her Spanish
boyfriend was working in the kitchen). And then it was back to the
hotel, where we went to sleep pretty much as soon as our heads hit
our respective pillows.
