It gets light quite
late here, so we've been getting up rather late each morning. Today,
however, I managed to be up in time to catch a gorgeous sunrise.
We've been so
comfortable in our lovely big house - with dog walks in the forest to
make sure we get a bit of fresh air - that we've made very little
effort to get out and explore our surrounds. Today, however, we set
off for the Medieval town of Gruyères – famous, of course, for the
cheese that is produced there. Set on a little hilltop above the
Saane River, it's certainly very quaint, boasting some well-preserved
ramparts and a lovely 13th-century chateau. And this being
Switzerland, it was of course surrounded by an impressive array of
snow-covered mountains.
The town is also
home to the HR Giger Museum, which has a big collection of works by
the artist who designed the alien in Alien. Naturally, it was closed
today, and we could only peer through the window at the amazing
museum cafe next door, which is fully decked out in Alien-style
décor.
It was rather cold,
so after a quick tour of the town, we drove back down the hill to the
cheese factory. While the girls played in the playground outside,
Kate and I went in to see if we could sample some cheese. There were
indeed some taste-testers out, but we were thwarted for some time but
a large Germanic gentleman who was treating them as his own private
cheese-platters, wandering around the shop offering them to his
friends. While we waited for him to have his fill, we checked out the
ageing room, where hundreds of rounds sit stacked up on shelves,
quietly acquiring extra flavour.
