At breakfast this
morning – back at Mama Chop again – we got to talking to a guy
from KL, now living in Munich, who was in town trying to help the
locals sort out their restaurants (he was some sort of culinary
consultant). He got a nice illustration of the sort of thing he
needed to fix when the staff announced, after our roti canai had been
served, that they had run out of the curry sauce that they normally
served with it. We got another, similar sort of illustration a bit
later when we went to buy our lunch ingredients at the minimart –
again, we could only find tuna mayonnaise, but we also couldn't find
anyone selling sliced bread that was still in date.
All loaded up, we
got the boat across to the national park and then, after paying our
entry fees, we took the same path as yesterday afternoon, but this
time kept going past the swimming area. As usual we saw plenty of
squirrels, but this time we saw little else. We did, however, catch
up to the English girl from yesterday, and walked with her the last
part of the way to another wildlife viewing hide, set up on a
hillside. It was obviously built to house overnight guests, with a
bathroom and bunks, but it had been left to decay slowly - the toilet
was disconnected and the bunks didn't look much like somewhere you
would want to sleep.
We sat for a while chatting to the English girl
and eating our lunch. We then walked back to the little riverside
beach for a swim and then went back to our rooms for some
air-conditioned quiet time. For dinner, we returned to the same
restaurant as last night – known as Family Restaurant – where we
had a rather low-key celebration of the anniversary of our first
leaving Winchester on the first leg of our big adventure. After
dinner, we went back across the river and Sarah and I went out
spotlighting along the boardwalk, but returned without having seen
anything of note.
