We decided to just
have a lazy day today. Zoe slept in until after 8.30am and then we
all walked walked down the road, where we bought some pancakes from
some street vendors (there are two of them right net to each other,
so we decided to do a taste test this morning, getting lemon and
sugar pancakes from both and comparing them. No great surprise, the
guy who charged more did a better job). Kate noticed a nice-looking
café just across the road, so we went in there and ordered some
coffees (they were admirably unconcerned about us bringing food in
with us). There was a cat asleep on one of the chairs and it quite
happily lay on my lap after I had shifted it. The girls and I then
waited there while Kate did the rounds of the travel agents to check
out the prices for the ferry to Koh Samui and then we all walked to
the beach.
While the girls
swam (and Sarah swung on a rope swing), Kate and I sat at a table just off the beach that had been put
there by one of the restaurants and we used their wifi to do some
planning for the next few days and weeks. One of the problems with
the sort of open-ended trip we're doing (and don't get me wrong, it's
a nice problem to have) is that when you arrive in a new country you
have too many choices of things to do and places to see – so it
actually takes a fair bit of work to narrow down the options and then
figure out how to get to the various places you've chosen and where
to stay when you get there. So we often need times like this to just
get our heads around what we're going to do next. It's also getting
slightly more difficult as we watch our war chest empty. We repaid
the restaurant whose furniture and wifi we're using by buying lunch
from them. Then, in the evening we went back to room then out for
pizza at the place down the road and the 7-Eleven and adjacent pancake
vendor for dessert.
