We got up late this
morning and walked over the road to the big supermarket, where we
bought some pastries and fruit and veg, which we then took down to
the beach for breakfast. The sun was already fairly high, and by the
time we managed to find some shade we were already pretty hot. We
then had to shift as we ate, as our little patch of shade slid across
the sand. When we were done, the girls and I went for a quick swim in
the too warm water, while Kate took the leftovers back to the room. I
foolishly went in without any sunscreen on and in the short time we
were in the water, I managed to get a bit burnt. After Kate had
rejoined us and we had swum a bit more, we walked up to No Stress for
some lunch and then returned to the hotel, where the girls swam in
the hotel pool while Kate and I started trying to put an itinerary
together for the next few weeks.
In the evening, we
headed back down to the beach to get some dinner, but when we got
there, all of the nearby restaurants were shut (it's incredibly quiet
here at the moment, so I guess they figured it wasn't worth staying
open), so we walked along the water's edge towards the more populated
area adjacent to the town – and thanked our lucky stars that we were
staying out of town. One more example of what unregulated Asian
tourism development looks like, it was a mess of tacky bars, souvenir
shops, mini marts, massage parlours, travel agents and unappetising
restaurants. It serves a purpose, however, and we stopped in at one
of the travel agents and bought some tickets to the little town of
Khao Sok, which is located on the edge of a national park. We then
went to McDonald's and got the girls some burgers for dinner, and to
a grill restaurant for something for Kate and me.
