This morning, Kate
and I got up early and went for a walk along the boardwalk that
connects the resort's two islands. We all then went to the Vista
restaurant for breakfast before going for another snorkelling session
on the reef near the restaurant. This time we came across a large
area where very large anemones were draped over the coral, each
inhabited by a little family of pink and white clownfish. We didn't
hang around long to watch them, however, as today the upper layers of
the water was filled with some sort of unpleasant algal droplets.
When we emerged from
the sea, we went over for a swim in the resort's main pool, an
amazing infinity pool that looks out over the ocean back towards the
mainland. We then wandered over to the Vista bar, where we sat on
swinging beds and ate calamari and fresh spring rolls and drank beer
and cocktails.
After a lunch of
sushi and pan-fried fish at the Driftwood bar, the girls watched
another movie while I caught a boat across to Koh Rong island to get
a guided of the little fishing village that looks back at the resort.
The resort does a lot of work in the village – everything from
environmental education to actually providing accommodation for the
local school's teachers and food scraps for the village pigs. I was
given a personal tour around the village by one of the staff from the
Song Saa Foundation, an independent body set up to run social and
environmental programmes in the region around the resort.
When I rejoined the
others, we went for another swim in the main pool and then slowly
wandered around the resort – walking out to Koh Bong island to see
if we could see the hornbills that Kate and Zoe had seen last night.
They weren't there, so we walked back to the villa, but just before
we got there, we heard a noise above us and there, in the trees, were
three of the enormous birds.
In the evening, we watched the sun go down from the Vista bar and then, for dinner, we went
back to the Vista restaurant, eating our delicious meal of Australian
lamb cutlets right out next to the water, and then we went back to
the villa to watch Maleficent.
